Social consciousness and social responsibility are becoming increasingly important to companies’ recruiting and retaining talent—one might even say it’s trendy. From self-care to diversity, companies everywhere are using popular buzzwords to get people interested in their brand, but, if we’re being honest, they don’t always follow through with their promised values. 

So, how can we tell if companies are practicing what they preach?

Bumble is a popular dating app where, according to their slogan, “women make the first move.” With a mission to rid the world of misogyny (woo!), Bumble is redefining gender roles with each swipe. Their socially conscious presence doesn’t just reach consumers—it begins in the Hive of their Austin, Texas headquarters.

Bumble knows that their users come from diverse backgrounds, so they hire people from diverse backgrounds. They expect kindness, accountability, and equality in their offices, cultivating an environment where their employees’ voices are heard and valued.

A supporter of philanthropy, Etsy offers a benefit that gives paid time off for their employees to volunteer and matches donations dollar-for-dollar up to $500 per employee.

“Being a socially responsible business is core to Etsy’s mission,” says Laura Campbell, senior director of global talent. “And we prioritize employees’ health and well-being, because it’s not just good for people, it’s good for business.”

3. Google (3.8 stars)

Google is most likely a part of your daily life. But did you know that they’re environmentally and socially conscious, too?

Google’s data center uses 50 percent less energy than others in the world and has committed to donating over $1 billion to renewable energy projects so that other businesses can reduce their carbon footprint.

The company also provides grants to nonprofits supporting people in a variety of ways—helping them recover after natural disasters, connecting food growers to people in need, and supporting mental health awareness.

4. Spotify (3.5 stars)

Spotify has been influential in areas such as diversity and inclusion. With playlists, artists, podcasts, and more for everyone around the world, the successful streaming service has millions of loyal users.

The values they present to listeners come from within the company. Employee benefits include:

  • 6 months of paid parental leave

  • Fertility coverage

  • Flexible hours and the ability to work from home

  • Three weeks of PTO

5. Levi Strauss & Co. (3.3 stars)

With initiatives such as employee resource groups, diverse hiring processes, pay equity, education and speaker events, and educating its employees on unconscious bias, the popular denim brand Levi Strauss & Co. is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace.

They also demonstrate social and environmental responsibility by using sustainable processes to create their products.
