The 4 Things Working Women Want Most from Their Employers

We call them the bread-and-butter benefits

We believe in the power of data to identify a path to improving the workplace for women. We sampled our dataset to understand what women want most from their employers.

These are the top four factors that InHerSight’s users identify as being most important in the workplace.

1. Paid time off: sick days, personal days, vacation days

2. Salary satisfaction: bonuses, merit increases, cost of living adjustments, overall compensation

3. The people you work with: respectful, professional, and unbiased coworkers

4. Flexible work hours: the ability to set your schedule as long as you get your work done

We call these the “bread-and-butter” benefits. Paid time off and flexible work hours give women the freedom to design their schedules around their lives, and respectful coworkers and good compensation provide a sense of security in career and in the workplace.

This list of preferences follows Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, with physiological needs (food shelter, rest) at the base of the pyramid, and security (emotional, personal, financial) security on top of that.

It should be noted that this list differs from the list of top predictors of women’s job satisfaction, which includes salary satisfaction and respectful coworkers, but not paid time off and flexible work hours. The top predictors of women’s job satisfaction are more closely related to security, while the above list of preferences include flexibility options.

Methodology

The most-wanted factors are are based on InHerSight's user reviews of more than 100K companies in the United States. Data accurate as of March 2019.
