2018 Midterm Election: The Results Are In

By InHerSight

They were fed up, they ran, they won. That’s right, during this midterm election cycle, a record number of women won seats in Congress and helped Democrats take control of the House for the first time in eight years. This historical peak in female political participation has been building momentum for the past two years through grassroots campaigns and activism. In addition to record amounts of women running and winning, 244 LGBTQ candidates ran for government office and one-third of candidates that ran for the House were women of color. Just a few notable highlights include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez being the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland becoming the first Native American women elected to Congress, and Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar becoming the first Muslim women elected to Congress (read about the rest of the records here). Here’s to making history!
