Telling Your Boss You’re Pregnant

We asked more than 2,000 women how they feel about telling their boss they’re expecting.

There’s a long list of ways employers discriminate against mothers and expectant mothers. From being fired, demoted, and verbally criticized, to being denied leave, promotions, raises, and even sanitary and proper pumping rooms, motherhood brings with it professional penalties so severe that some women opt out of parenthood altogether.

We asked more than 2,000 women how comfortable they would be telling their boss they’re pregnant.

Thirty-six percent say they would probably or absolutely be nervous to disclose this to their boss. The largest percentage share answered negatively: no, they would not be nervous to tell their boss.
