Ayanna Pressley is predicted to become the Democratic Representative for Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District after she defeated long-standing incumbent Mike Capuano in the primary yesterday. In 2009, Pressley became the first African-American woman elected to the Boston City Council and is anticipated to continue her legacy as the first African-American woman to serve in the Massachusetts House. Pressley has received an outpouring of support and praise, including from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who won the Democratic primary in a similar fashion--she unseated Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's 14th congressional district. Pressley’s trailblazing upset victory is emblematic of a larger trend of women making record-breaking strides within the Democratic Primaries this year.
