When you’re in the right environment, the chances for growth are inevitable. Just ask Mackenzie W. and Sarah V., two longtime leaders at Fisher Investments, who’ve built thriving careers by leaning into new challenges and new roles with the full support of their peers and leaders. With nearly 30 years of combined experience at the firm, they’ve seen firsthand how a culture rooted in opportunity, encouragement, and collaboration can help people stretch, succeed, and stay.

Here, they share what makes their company's culture a starting point for professional evolution and personal fulfillment. Their stories spotlight three defining traits of a truly growth-oriented environment where internal mobility is the norm.

3 key traits of a growth-oriented company culture

1. You meet employees with multiple career paths at one company

A hallmark of a growth-minded culture is the ability to grow without leaving. Between Mackenzie and Sarah, they've held a combined dozen roles within the company—and neither woman had to leave to advance.

Mackenzie began her 15-year career at Fisher as a Client Service Associate and steadily grew into her current role as Group Vice President of Investment Counselors. “Fisher has been instrumental in supporting my career development through its commitment to mentorship, internal training programs, and access to leadership development opportunities. The company's focus on professional growth has allowed me to gain new skills and perspectives, enabling me to take on more responsibility and leadership roles over time.” she says.

Sarah echoes that sentiment. “I’ve had nine unique roles at Fisher! I feel like I’ve had the opportunity to have multiple careers and challenge myself in new ways, all while never having to leave the company.” Employees have access to an Internal Career Center with internal job posts, and Sarah shared that her transitions were backed by transparency and encouragement from leadership.

2. Employees experience support that unlocks potential

At Fisher, stepping into new challenges doesn’t mean going it alone. Sarah recalls being asked to fill in as an interim Vice President and receiving above-and-beyond support from leadership to make changes that allowed her to step into the role. “It was a wonderful experience that ended up leading me to my current position, and I couldn’t have done it without the support,” she says.

Mackenzie shares a similar story of collective resilience: During a volatile market period, former Investment Counselors across the firm stepped in to increase client calls. “It reflects Fisher’s strong culture of teamwork and support,” she says. “I felt truly supported knowing the company prioritizes both client service and employee well-being.”

This culture of stepping up and standing together not only drives results—it builds trust. And it makes for stronger leaders in the process.

Mackenzie adds, “At Fisher, I’ve gained a variety of skills that I didn’t initially expect to develop. One key skill is the ability to lead and manage diverse teams, which has strengthened my communication and interpersonal skills in ways I hadn’t anticipated. The company’s collaborative environment has taught me how to effectively navigate complex team dynamics and motivate others to achieve our common goals.”

3. There’s evidence of a culture that champions merit and collaboration

Both leaders highlight Fisher’s meritocratic environment and open office layout as catalysts for connection and recognition. “Hard work and dedication are valued,” Mackenzie says. “Everyone has the opportunity to grow based on their contributions.” The transparent setup makes leadership more approachable and fosters frequent cross-team collaboration.

Sarah notes how recognition is shared, which reflects just how impactful even the smallest contributors can be. “I love that at Fisher there is a culture of building up each other. It’s the norm to share recognition. It creates a culture of everyone trying their hardest to do better, and I love being a part of that.”

The takeaway: It’s clear high-growth cultures invest in their people

At Fisher Investments, growth is embedded in the structure, the support, and the spirit of how people work, and you can see that from the mindset of their employees. “I’m eager to embrace new challenges that allow me to enhance client experiences and foster growth within my team,” Mackenzie says.

Sarah adds, “Do your best and constantly challenge yourself, and you’ll be ready when opportunity presents itself.”

For professionals seeking more than just a job—for those craving challenge, support, and evolution—a culture like Fisher’s may be exactly where growth begins.
