The Flight Operations Specialist’s primary responsibility is to assist in the execution of the North American Capture program, coordinating with subcontractors and staff to ensure collection of geospatial data in a timely, efficient, and cost-effective manner. Clear communication and strategic planning are key aspects of this role in order to effectively utilize capture resources to meet program requirements. 

A typical day for you may look like this…

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate flight priorities for pilots operating Nearmap camera systems.
  • Closely monitor national weather and METARs/TAFs to make necessary changes to priorities on a daily basis.
  • Monitor daily pilot activity and make sure no weather opportunities are missed.
  • Ensure geospatial data is captured on schedule, within the constraints of civil aviation regulations, weather, subcontracted flight services, and equipment availability.
  • Ensure that flight service subcontractors have all necessary components to complete scheduled work (media, current software, camera systems, etc).
  • Communicate in a timely fashion with pilots regarding daily operations, which may require communicating outside of regular business hours.
  • Identify and escalate concerns or issues relating to data processing and capture systems.
  • Track status of capture program, identifying, and escalating concerns or issues.
  • Work with Air Traffic Control regarding airspace restrictions and flight coordination. 
  • Work with Aerial Survey Engineers to plan camera system installs, removals, and maintenance to ensure minimal disruption to the capture program.
  • Review Pilot Daily Reports for pertinent information.
  • This role requires communication with pilots outside of standard office hours and on weekends.
  • Work with Director of North American Survey Ops to plan yearly capture program.
  • Create and modify flight plans as the capture program grows and evolves.
  • Maintain an optimal coverage program subject to program goals and update regularly as needed.
  • Support invoicing of operators by ensuring service history is properly maintained and up to date
  • Compile and distribute regular capture program status to internal stakeholders.
  • Respond to quote requests for bespoke surveys and provide survey information as needed to support sales activities.
  • Provide feedback to Survey Systems Team when new releases of planning and processing software are released. 
  • Suggest operational improvements to streamline the flight planning and data processing software.
  • Support the Survey Ops Roadmap initiatives by providing insight and information about the capture program. 
  • Establish best practices and document operational workflows and procedures to ensure they are globally consistent, scalable, and efficient.
  • Onboard new pilots with Nearmap Survey Operations procedures.
  • Work with Technical Writer to ensure documentation is kept up to date.
  • Identify pilot non-conformance and work with the pilot and subcontractor to make necessary corrections.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing projects with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in an operational environment or data production using a variety of systems. 
  • Experience with coordination, scheduling, and planning. 
  • Experience communicating with a diverse group of stakeholders across all levels of an organization.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience within related fields required.
  • Experience with mapping, aerial survey, remote sensing, and GIS a plus.
  • Experience in aviation a plus.  
  • Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels of the business, both internal and external.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage projects in a fast moving environment.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Basic knowledge of ESRI and other GIS software a plus.
  • Ability to read and understand weather patterns.
  • BA/BS degree required – in Business Administration, Operations, Communication, Aviation, Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, or Meteorology preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
